Preparing for Tryouts
As the school volleyball season draws to a close, we begin to shift our thoughts to the upcoming club season. The most common questions coaches are asked are:
- “What do I need to do to prepare for tryouts?”
- “What do coaches look for during tryouts?”
Preparing for tryouts falls into one major aspect…your mindset. Clear your mind before you walk through the doors. I guarantee coaches can see past the nervousness and jitters. As an athlete you need to be able to focus and have the “next play/ I can do this” mentality. Bring with you your desire and determination and you’ll be fine.
As to how we evaluate players, that can be summed up very simply as well. Here’s what we are looking for:
- Athleticism
- Communication skills
- Court awareness/volleyball IQ
- Coachability
Items one and two are self-explanatory but here is a little more detail regarding three and four. Volleyball IQ refers to knowing positional responsibilities as it relates to offensive attacks, base defense, and defensive covers against all opponent attack positions. Court awareness is similar but can be defined with something as simple as knowing your zone and trusting teammates.
Coachability is all on you. Leave your ego at the door. You must have a positive attitude and be willing to learn. We put major emphasis on accountability, respect for yourself and others, and self-determination. We can’t teach effort. That’s all on you!
Lastly, I would remind girls to “shake it off!” We know you will make mistakes. We are looking for the “WOW” moments. Because if you can do it once you can do it again. I look forward to seeing a huge turnout this year. Enjoy the rest of your school season. Remember to JUMP HIGH and HIT HARD!!
